UI/UX for Developers

Fundamental Principles and Neat Tricks for Becoming a Better Designer

Kenneth Luplau-Brøgger

About this session

This session aims to provide you with a rundown of the essential principles of user interface design, giving you the tools to design your own solutions.

We'll start by going through key design principles, such as C.R.A.P. (Contrast, Repetition, Alignment, Proximity), examining how they apply in real-world scenarios. We'll then move on to the concept of constraint-based design, demonstrating how limitations can be leveraged to make faster decisions and ultimately create more beautiful and coherent designs.

After learning about the rules, we break them 😄 — but with clear intent. This approach brings designs to life and creates interest. We'll conclude where we'll learn how to optimize designs by applying the principles and techniques we just learned.

This talk aims to tool-up developers with a mix of theoretical design knowledge and practical tricks, making the task of designing solutions less daunting for them in the future.

Key learnings:

  • You'll learn about fundamental design principles and see examples in real-world applications
  • You'll learn to design using constraints, including demonstrations of these
  • You'll explore how to break the rules with "intent"
  • You'll learn to optimize a design using the approaches we've just discussed
